Indie darlings and Stockport’s finest, Blossoms, are boogying into a new era with fresh single Joke About Divorce.
The track was recorded entirely live on tape at Tile House Studios, which is a vintage studio specialising in analogue recording. On social media, the band explain: “The second we got the mix back, it felt like an instant Blossoms classic (if we do say so ourselves).”
Listen closely, and you’ll also hear Rick Astley, who’s now friends with the group, offering backing vocals on the outro of the track.
Blossoms left their major label (Virgin EMI) in 2023 after four albums, three of which went to #1 on the UK Album Charts, and founded their own label, ODD SK Recordings. They played their biggest show to date at Wynthenshaw Park to close the chapter, and then released Gary, which received critical applause and debuted at #1.
This new single is the band’s first new music since the expanded version of Gary was released in late 2024. Sonically, it picks up right where the record left off, continuing to lean into retro-disco (Chic, Kool & The Gang).
In the press, frontman Tom Ogden uncovers the song’s inspiration:
“During every argument, no matter how big or small, there’s always that moment where humour could completely disarm you both and diffuse the whole thing. On this occasion, I thought joking about divorce would do exactly that… I just got the timing completely wrong. Instead, it made things worse, and that moment ended up immortalised in a three-and-a-half-minute pop song.”
Blossoms are gearing up for a couple of enormous shows over the Summer, including a headline slot at NBHD Weekender and a supporting-headline slot at Tramlines. Tickets are almost sold out at both festivals, so grab yours before they’re gone.
With a new single, a strong new aesthetic, and an Instagram reset, the band strongly implies a new album and tour are on the way soon.
Listen to ‘Joke About Divorce’ now everywhere.
